Roosevelt Avenue Islets

Se propone el área frente al Complejo Deportivo como adecuada para una intervención que acentúe el carácter de la línea. La obra podrá ser observada desde varios puntos, incluyendo los terrenos del Complejo Deportivo, Plaza las Américas y el expreso. Una estrategia de iluminación debe destacar el conjunto en las noches.
About the Area
Nuestros intentos de urbanismo metropolitano han visto en la línea, (en la de la carretera, el tranvía o el tren), uno de los elementos característicos del San Juan moderno. Estas líneas, convertidas hoy en avenidas, contienen experiencias panorámicas donde abunda el edificio representativo o el experimento urbano del momento en una sucesión de espacios y de los tiempos que los produjeron. Son la Ponce de León, la Fernández Juncos, la Muñoz Rivera y la paradigmática Roosevelt las que a duras penas articulan un sentido de sitio en una ciudad donde lo genérico atenta contra toda forma de memoria. Reforzar su particularidad con arte es una manera de reafirmar nuestro pasado reciente que ya empieza a tener el aroma de la historia.
Aphorism

With this landscaping intervention, West 8 shall transform Roosevelt Avenue and its traffic arteries into elegant, green, ecological avenues and expressways. The project is based on a special reading of the context of the city of San Juan; its rich ironworks tradition and the city's magnificent flowers and vegetation.

 “Canopy of Bouganvilaeas” (known as trinitarias in Puerto Rico) consists of a large, red modular structure, installed in the median strip and furnished with a long net of cables to support the bouganvilaeas. The special design of this net of cables shall cast a pattern of shadows over sidewalks and streets.

The design proposed by West 8 will endow San Juan with a spectacular floral monument, that will shade the traffic arteries and impact the iconography of the capital city. Viewed from passing cars, the piece will simulate dancing figures, supporting on their nets the expansion of traditional Puerto Rican flora. Plant growth will cover the avenue with a spectacular canopy of flowers, shade and cool air, and will surely become a landmark in the city, turning this nowhere into a unique space.

Note: The structure of the canopy will have a series of hanging pots, with a special irrigation and drainage system. Moreover, the design of the structure is responsive to Puerto Rico's climate.
