Alberto Fernández was born on May 19, 1973, in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. He studied at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus, earning a BA in fine arts. In 1998 he was awarded a scholarship to pursue post-graduate studies in Florence, Italy, with an emphasis on sculpture.

Alongside sculpture, Fernández uses diverse media such as graphics, ceramics, photography and computer art. His art is nourished by constant experimentation between new and traditional forms of artistic expression, with a particular focus on subjects that illustrate the struggles and dynamics between opposing or different forces, that give birth to new entities and ideas.
